About the Project

CAST – Centro per un Appropriato Sviluppo Tecnologico – is an Italian non-governmental organization operating in Kenya since 2007, with long-standing experience in supporting coastal and rural communities in Kilifi County. Building on this experience and long-term presence in the coastal region, with the present project, CAST seeks to improve the quality, safety and market competitiveness of fisheries and aquaculture products, strengthen local value chains, increase income opportunities for coastal communities, and reinforce the institutional capacities of the Kilifi County Fisheries Department. Through infrastructure development, technical assistance, capacity building and stakeholder engagement, the project contributes to sustainable blue economy development, food security and improved livelihoods for local fishing communities.

Position Overview

CAST is seeking a motivated and proactive Field coordinator to support the implementation of the Blu Economy Project in Kilifi County, Kenya.

Based in Kenya, the Field coordinator will coordinate the day-to-day implementation of project activities, supervise the local project team, support the financial and administrative management of the project, and ensure timely monitoring and reporting. The Field coordinator will work under the direct supervision of the Programme Coordinator at CAST Headquarters in Italy and will contribute to the successful delivery of project results in compliance with donor requirements and CAST procedures. The position requires a hands-on approach, strong organizational skills and the ability to work effectively in a multicultural environment while maintaining close coordination with CAST Headquarters in Italy.

 

Key responsibilities

The Field coordinator will:

  • Coordinate the day-to-day implementation of project activities in accordance with the approved work plan.

  • Supervise and support the local project staff and consultants, ensuring effective communication and teamwork.

  • Liaise with the Kilifi County Government, local institutions, community organizations and other project stakeholders.

  • Monitor project progress against planned activities and report any implementation issues to CAST Headquarters.

  • Support the preparation and monitoring of project budgets, expenditures and financial documentation.

  • Ensure that procurement and administrative procedures are carried out in compliance with donor requirements and CAST internal procedures.

  • Prepare narrative reports, financial documentation and supporting evidence for submission to CAST Headquarters and the donor.

  • Maintain regular communication with the Programme Coordinator in Italy, providing updates on project implementation, achievements, risks and challenges.

  • Support monitoring, evaluation and data collection activities, ensuring accurate reporting of project indicators.

  • Contribute to project visibility, communication and dissemination activities.

  • Identify operational issues and propose appropriate corrective actions.

  • Represent CAST at local coordination meetings and maintain constructive relationships with project stakeholders.

 

Requirements

Education

  • Master's degree in International Cooperation, Rural Development, Agriculture, Fisheries Science, Aquaculture, Marine Sciences, Environmental Sciences, Natural Resource Management, Economics, Project Management or a related field.

Professional Experience

  • At least 2 years of experience in the implementation or management of international development cooperation projects.

  • Experience in coordinating field activities and working with local institutions and communities.

  • Experience in financial monitoring and administrative procedures is an asset.

  • Experience in donor-funded projects is desirable.

  • Previous experience in Kenya or East Africa will be considered an asset.

  • Experience in fisheries, aquaculture, Blue Economy, food security or rural development programmes is an advantage.

Technical Competencies

  • Project Cycle Management (PCM)

  • Budget monitoring and financial reporting

  • Procurement and administrative procedures

  • Monitoring, Evaluation and Learning (MEAL)

  • Microsoft Office (especially Excel)

  • Good report writing skills

Languages

  • Excellent command of English, both written and spoken (C1 level or equivalent).

  • Good knowledge of Italian is considered an asset.  

  • Knowledge of Kiswahili is desirable.
